The Board Room

A Board Room is a shared board for people who decide together: ask it together, save your decisions together, and keep your own board private.

What it is

A Board Room is a board you share with the people you make decisions with. Business partners, a founder and a cofounder, or a couple planning a move each keep their own private board, and also share a room for the decisions they make together.

In the room you ask a board of advisors together: the five built-in advisors (the five that come with Advicity) and any advisor someone copies in from their own board. Everyone in the room reads the same questions and the same answers, saves the decisions you make together, and sees how they worked out.

A room is a board of its own. It is not a window into anyone's private board. What happens in the room stays in the room, and what happens on your own board never reaches it.

Why it matters

Some decisions belong to more than one person. When partners each take the question to their own advisors, they come back with two sets of advice built on two different pictures. A Board Room gives the shared decision one place, one board and one track record, so the next decision you make together starts from how the last one worked out. Every person's own board stays private the whole time.

How it works

  1. A member on the Ink plan or the Brass plan creates a room from Board Room in the menu and becomes its owner. Each room has its own page.
  2. The owner invites people by their email address and chooses whether each one is a member or a viewer. Only an owner can invite someone or withdraw an invitation. Members can ask, save decisions and share notes; viewers can read everything in the room but cannot change anything.
  3. The invitation waits in Advicity for the person who signs in with that email address. They join by accepting it on their Board Room page. Nobody joins a room without accepting an invitation.
  4. On the room's page, a member asks the room's board a question. Ask the whole board and the Chair picks the 2 to 4 advisors best placed to answer, then sums up where they agree and differ. Or tick the advisors you want. Each answer says how sure the advisor is and what it drew on.
  5. When an answer leads to a decision, save it to the room with how confident you are and the date you will know how it worked out. On that date, the room's board asks the person who saved it how it went. They answer with one tap or click, and that outcome goes into the room's track record and helps make the room's next answers better.
  6. A member can share a newsletter, course or note with the room for its advisors to learn from. It belongs to the room and never reaches anyone's own board.
  7. To bring an advisor from your own board into the room, copy it in. The copy brings what the advisor knows, how it thinks and what it will not do. It never brings what it remembers about you. Your original advisor stays on your board, unchanged.
  8. The owner role can be passed to a member of the room, not to a viewer, and the old owner stays as a member. Anyone can leave a room from its page, and the owner can remove a member or a viewer. When the last paying member leaves, the room turns read-only: everything stays readable and nothing is deleted.

A worked example

Maya and Luis own a small restaurant group together, and both are on the Ink plan. Maya creates a Board Room called "The Group" and invites Luis as a member. Luis signs in and accepts. Luis asks the room's board whether to open a third location this year. The Chair asks the money, work and people advisors, and sums up. Maya and Luis save their decision, wait until spring, with a check-in date in 30 days. On that date Luis gets one tap or click to say how it went, and the room's track record shows it. Neither of them ever sees the other's own board.

Which plans include it

Your own board stays yours. A room has no separate charge: each owner and member needs the Ink plan or the Brass plan, their own or a seat the room's owner pays for, and a viewer needs no plan at all. The Ink plan holds one Board Room and the Brass plan holds up to five. The Paper plan does not include Board Rooms. A room's limits follow the highest plan among its owners and members, so one Brass member gives the whole room the Brass plan's limits. Beyond the five built-in advisors, a room with an Ink member holds three advisors of its own, and a room with a Brass member holds ten.

Privacy and what the board keeps

Rooms are sealed from each other and from every private board. No one in a room can see your own board, and nothing your own advisors remember about you is used to answer a question in a room. An advisor copied into a room never brings its memory with it. Questions, answers, decisions and shared notes in a room belong to the room. An invitation can be seen only by the person signed in with the email address it was sent to, and by the room's owners. When a room turns read-only, it keeps everything it held.

Questions

Can the other people in my room see my own board?

No. Your own board is invisible to everyone else in the room, with no exception.

Does the room's board know what my own advisors know about me?

No. The room's advisors answer from what the room has been given: its own questions, decisions and shared notes. Nothing from your own board comes in.

Who gets asked how a decision went?

The person who saved the decision. On the check-in date they get one tap or click to say how it went, and the answer goes into the room's track record for everyone in the room.

Does Advicity email the invitation?

No. Let the person know you have invited them. The invitation is waiting when they sign in with that email address.

What happens if the only paying member leaves?

The room turns read-only. Everything stays readable and nothing is deleted. It opens back up when a paying member joins or a plan is paid again.

Can I pay for someone else's place in my room?

Yes. As the room's owner, you can pay for the Ink or Brass seat of someone you invite as a member. You need your own Ink plan or Brass plan, paid up to date, and the seat is added to your own bill. On Your plan you see their email address, the seat's plan and what it costs, never anything on their board. A viewer needs no plan.

Is there an extra charge for a room?

No. There is no separate charge for a room.
