Your Chair and turning advisors on or off
Give your Chair a name of your own, and turn any advisor off or back on. An advisor you turn off keeps everything it knows about you.
What it is
Two of the controls on your Settings page that keep your board yours. The first is your Chair's name. The Chair is not an advisor: it has no seat and no area. When you ask the whole board, it picks the advisors best placed to answer and gives you its call first, drawn from their answers. Its name starts as "The Chair", and you can change it to any name you like.
The second is turning advisors on or off. Any advisor on your board can be turned off and turned back on again. An advisor that is off sits out. It is not consulted and it is not asked, so it gives no answers while it is off. Everything it knows about you stays exactly where it was.
Advisors are not removed from a board. Turning one off is how you take an advisor out of your answers.
Why it matters
A board is only useful if it fits the season you are in. There are months when the money questions are loud and the body questions can wait, and months when it is the other way round. Turning an advisor off lets you quiet a seat without losing the work that seat has done. When you turn it back on, nothing it knew about you has been deleted.
Naming the Chair is a smaller thing, but it is yours. You can keep "The Chair", or give it a name that makes the board feel like your own room.
How it works
- Open Settings. Each advisor on your board is listed by name, with whether it is on or off.
- Press "Turn off" beside the advisor you want to sit out. From that moment, the advisor is left out of everything your board reads when it answers, and it is not offered when you ask a question.
- What the advisor knows about you is kept on your board, untouched.
- Press "Turn on" whenever you like. The advisor comes back into your answers, and nothing it knew about you was deleted while it was off.
- To name your Chair, type the name you want and save it. A blank name is not accepted, so your Chair always has one.
- Renaming the Chair changes the name only, on your screens. It adds no advisor and changes nothing about how your advisors answer or how the Chair picks them.
- If your plan has set an advisor aside after a move to a smaller plan, Settings says so beside its name and points you to Your plan, where you choose which advisors stay live.
A worked example
Jordan is on the Ink plan with all five built-in advisors. For the next two months he is closing a sale of his business, and he wants every answer focused on money and work. On Settings he turns off Beatrice Hollis, his AI people advisor, and Iris Merrow, his AI mind advisor. When he asks a question now, only the advisors still on are offered, and only those advisors answer. After the sale closes, he turns both back on. Nothing either advisor knew about him was lost while it sat out. Along the way he renamed his Chair "Harbor", because that is what he calls his planning notebook.
Which plans include it
Both controls are on the Paper plan, the Ink plan and the Brass plan. Turning an advisor off does not free a place for another one. Your plan decides how many advisors your board can hold, and an advisor that is off still holds its place, so you can always turn it back on.
Privacy and what the board keeps
Turning an advisor off never deletes anything. The board keeps what that advisor knows about you, and keeps it out of your answers until you turn the advisor back on. The board also records that the advisor was turned off or on, and when. Your Chair's name is kept on your board and can be read only by the people on your board. The Settings page keeps nothing in your browser: a name you type goes to your board when you save it, and nowhere else.
Questions
- Does turning an advisor off delete what it knows about me?
No. It keeps everything. It simply sits out until you turn it back on.
- Can I remove an advisor from my board?
No. Advisors are not removed from a board. Turning one off takes it out of your answers, and it keeps what it knows about you.
- If I turn an advisor off, can I seat a different one in its place?
No. An advisor that is off still holds its place on your board, so it can come back whenever you want it.
- What is the Chair called if I never rename it?
"The Chair". You can rename it at any time.
- Does the Chair's name change how my board answers?
No. It is a name only.
